Bill had told me that he wanted to open the Serpentarium on Christmas. Considering that we were married in late July (1947), that gave us about five months. There was so much to be done, but we did not falter. Bill, Bill Jr., and I all worked diligently every single day only to be met with new obstacles to overcome on the following morning. The property was located off of highway 1 and our progress could be charted by the passersby. At first cars flew by, but then some slowed. Some even curiously drifted at a crawl before the drivers remembered their pressing engagements and sped away. Soon enough, however, those moving cars slowed to a stop right in our driveway. They would ask what we were doing; what was under construction? What new landmark was being erected? What were we contributing to Florida’s already booming tourist industry? When would we open? How much was admission? Would we have guides assigned to groups? Or just allow visitors to wander freely?
